Ranch Chex Mix Recipe for Game Day and Parties

I call this Homemade Ranch Chex Mix “Kendell’s Chex Mix” because my friend Kristi first taught me how to make it. Over time I adjusted the seasonings and ingredients to create my own version — a savory, ranch-flavored snack mix that’s perfect for parties, road trips, or cozy movie nights. Below you’ll find the full recipe, clear instructions, and helpful tips for variations, storage, and substitutions so you can make this at home with confidence.

This homemade ranch Chex mix is a crunchy, savory snack that blends several cereals, nuts, and crunchy bites with a buttery ranch seasoning. It’s easily customizable — swap in or omit nuts, add extra pretzels, or use different chips to match your preferences. The recipe yields a large batch, making it ideal for sharing at gatherings or keeping on hand for snacking.

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks Butter
  • 4 tablespoons Rosé Vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons Ranch Seasoning Powder
  • 5 cups Corn Chex
  • 4 cups Rice Chex
  • 5 cups Wheat Chex
  • 2 ½ cups Cocktail Peanuts
  • 2 cups Cashews
  • 4 cups Pretzels
  • 3 cups Sesame Sticks
  • 2 cups Bagel Chips
  • 2 cups Rye Chips
  • 4 cups Cheez-its

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 250˚F.
  2. Melt the butter, then whisk in the Rosé vinegar and ranch seasoning until smooth. This creates the flavor coating that will cling to the mix.
  3. In a very large mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Add the butter mixture in three additions, tossing thoroughly after each addition to coat everything evenly.
  4. Spread the coated mix in an even layer on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, stirring and turning the mixture every 15 minutes to ensure even crisping and to prevent burning.
  5. Remove the pans and let the Chex mix cool completely on the counter. Cooling allows the pieces to crisp up and the flavors to set.
  6. Once cooled, store the snack mix in airtight containers or tins. Properly stored, it will keep up to a month, though it’s often eaten long before then.

Notes

I prefer Rosé vinegar in this recipe rather than traditional Worcestershire sauce; it adds a bright tang and a little zing that pairs well with ranch seasoning. Kristi’s original version included Worcestershire sauce plus garlic and onion powders; I simplified and replaced those with the vinegar and a good-quality ranch seasoning powder for consistent, bold flavor.

Choice and quantity of mix-ins are flexible. You can increase or decrease nuts, change the types of chips, or leave out any item to accommodate allergies or preferences. For a nut-free version, omit the peanuts and cashews and add extra crunchy elements like extra pretzels, bagel chips, or seasoned snack sticks.

For best results use a very large bowl for mixing so everything can be tossed without spilling. When baking, use rimmed baking sheets and parchment paper to make cleanup easier. Stirring every 15 minutes helps the mix brown evenly and keeps any buttery spots from becoming greasy.

Serving ideas: place the mix in a large bowl for parties, divide it into small gift tins for holidays, or pack it into resealable containers for snacks on the go. This savory ranch Chex mix is great alongside drinks, as game-day fare, or as a portable snack for hikes and road trips.

Variations: add a pinch of cayenne for heat, a teaspoon of smoked paprika for depth, or a sprinkle of grated Parmesan for cheesy notes. To make this gluten-free, use certified gluten-free cereals and chips.

Recommended Products

  • Large mixing bowl (around 10–12 quarts) — useful for mixing and storing large batches.
  • Good-quality Rosé or red wine vinegar — for the bright tang in the seasoning mix.
