Hello to readers arriving from Mashable or Pinterest! I originally published this recipe under Honey B’s and Birch Trees and recently refreshed the post. Thanks for visiting — if you enjoy homemade projects, browse my recipes on Honey & Birch when you have time. Now let’s get to melt and pour soap.

If you need a last-minute gift idea for Mother’s Day, melt and pour soap is quick, attractive, and fun to customize. Unlike traditional cold-process soap, melt and pour does not require curing for weeks and avoids handling raw lye, making it a safer option for beginners. With a few basic supplies and some creativity, you can craft bars scented and colored to suit the recipient.

Melt and Pour Soap Supplies

  • Melt and pour soap base
  • Silicone or plastic soap mold
  • Microwavable container with a spout (a glass measuring cup works well)
  • Wooden or silicone stirrers
  • Dedicated measuring spoons and pipettes (do not use kitchen utensils for food)
  • Small spray bottle with rubbing alcohol
  • Colorants (liquid colorants or mica powders)
  • Fragrance oils or essential oils
  • Additives like oats, vanilla bean specks, or dried flowers

For this tutorial I used liquid colorants and mica, honey and lavender scents, and small additives such as oats and vanilla specks for texture. Gather supplies from online retailers or local craft stores and set up a clean workspace before you begin.

Melt & Pour Soap Directions

1. Cut enough soap base to fill your mold and place the pieces in your microwavable container. My mold makes three cubes per bar, so I used six small blocks for two bars. Heat in short bursts—about 10 seconds at a time—stirring between intervals until the base has fully melted. Avoid overheating or boiling the soap.

2. Once melted, add colorant, fragrance, and any additives. Stir gently and thoroughly with a wooden or silicone stirrer. Add scent and color gradually: it’s easy to add more, but impossible to remove once mixed in.

3. Pour the blended soap into the mold. Lightly mist the surface with rubbing alcohol to eliminate bubbles. If you want texture on top, sprinkle additives like oats sparingly; heavy toppings may fall off when unmolding.

4. Repeat with any additional color or scent combinations, layering or swirling as desired. I made three variations in one batch:

  1. Gold colorant with honey fragrance and oats
  2. Purple colorant with lavender fragrance and vanilla bean specks
  3. Gold colorant with lavender fragrance and a partial swirl of vanilla specks for a marbled effect

Your Soap Is Done

Allow the soap to set. You can unmold bars in as little as two hours, though I prefer to wait overnight so the bars are fully firm. When ready, gently pop each bar out of the mold and trim any rough edges if needed.

For simple packaging, wrap each bar in a strip of decorative paper or kraft wrap and secure with a glue stick or ribbon. Personalize labels with the scent and any special notes for the recipient.
