If you enjoy bushcraft, ultralight backpacking or travel in a campervan, a reliable small coffee maker can make mornings much better. Over the next few weeks I’m testing several compact brewers to find the best camping coffee maker — and here’s my full review of the Hario V60.

Tell me in the comments what you look for in a camping coffee maker and I’ll help you find a great match.

HARIO V60 COFFEE MAKER REVIEW

The Hario V60 is a classic pour-over dripper, available in a range of colours including the turquoise ceramic version shown here. It’s made in Japan and reflects a minimalist, functional design that many coffee lovers appreciate.

Because this review focuses on camping and travel, it’s worth noting the material: ceramic feels sturdy and high-quality, but is heavier and more fragile than plastic or metal options. If you want something indestructible for rough trips, Hario also makes plastic V60s.

The dripper arrives in a simple cardboard box with no plastic or polystyrene packing — a nice touch for anyone trying to reduce waste.

Inside the box you’ll find a small white scoop that helps you measure coffee consistently, and the included instructions are clear and straightforward.

The instruction card is brief but effective: Hario keeps the steps simple and easy to follow, which is ideal when you’re brewing outdoors or with limited gear.

HOW DO YOU USE A HARIO V60?

Start by washing the V60 in hot, soapy water before first use. Place it on top of your favourite cup or server.

Take a size 02 paper filter and fold along the seams so it opens neatly inside the dripper — this helps the filter sit correctly and prevents folds from sticking to the sides.

Add one level scoop of freshly ground coffee (Hario’s scoop is included). Aim for a fine-medium grind for balanced extraction.

Shake the grounds lightly to level them. Boil water, let it cool for 20–30 seconds to reach the ideal brewing temperature, then pour slowly in a spiral from the centre outward, just enough to wet the grounds. Wait about 30 seconds for the coffee to bloom — this releases trapped carbon dioxide and improves flavour extraction.

Finish by pouring the remaining hot water in a steady circular motion. The brew will take up to three minutes to pass through the filter. Remove the dripper and enjoy the cup.

HOW MANY CUPS OF COFFEE DOES IT MAKE?

The standard V60 size 02 brews a single cup directly into your mug. Larger V60 models exist that drip into a server for multiple cups, but the compact size tested here is intended for individual servings — a good fit for solo campers.

WHAT COFFEE GROUNDS SHOULD I USE WITH THE HARIO V60?

Use a fine-medium grind for best results. Coarse grounds let water pass too quickly and under-extract the coffee; very fine grounds slow the water excessively and can produce a bitter, over-extracted cup.

THINGS I LOVED ABOUT THE HARIO V60

The colour — the turquoise finish is attractive and stands out in camp kitchens. Beyond aesthetics, the V60’s simple form and quality ceramic finish give it a premium feel.

The Hario V60’s clean, minimalist design is a major plus. It’s easy to use and quick to clean; the ceramic is dishwasher-safe and doesn’t retain flavours or odors.

Paper filters are a consumable, but size 02 filters are inexpensive and widely available.

Most important: the coffee tastes great. In a head-to-head taste test between the V60 and an AeroPress, I slightly preferred the AeroPress — but the V60’s cup was close and very enjoyable, especially when brewed carefully.

THINGS I DIDN’T LOVE ABOUT THE HARIO V60

Price feels a little high for such a simple product, though the ceramic build quality is excellent. If budget or fragility is a concern, consider the plastic V60 model which is much cheaper and more travel-friendly.
